Our Team | Profiles

Marty Shumka

I am the founding partner of advantage conditioning and passionate about a natural, healthy lifestyle.  I started with a hand full of business cards and one client 15 years ago.  Now, I work alongside a team of brilliant personal trainers, I consult with work place wellness committees interested in expanding their wellness programs, write newsletters for our website and corporate customers, share my knowledge every Monday  with the viewers of Break Fast Television, and still training some amazing clients.

Little known fact:
Even though I grew up on the farm, I am ridiculously afraid of spiders.

Perfect Sunday:
A glass of red wine, playing my guitar, writing a new song.

Lindsay Jurkowski

I am a personal trainer and a co-owner of Advantage Conditioning Ltd. I believe every person is motivated in different ways to reach their fitness goals.  I love helping people make healthy lifestyle changes that they can share with family and friends.

Little known fact:
I absolutely hate chocolate

Lori McGinnis

When I was growing up I wanted to be Bruce Springsteen’s girlfriend or Indiana Jones.  Somehow I lost my way and became a nationally certified personal trainer with a degree in Kinesiology from the University of Winnipeg instead.  Now I can’t imagine not being active!  My passion is the promotion and adherence to health; showing people how easy it can be to start and maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle.  I genuinely enjoy learning and applying new information to my practice. Whether it’s introducing you to resistance exercise for the first time, complementing your existing fitness routine, or adding that new twist to keep things fresh, fun and challenging, I look forward to working with you.

Before working at Advantage I worked independently as a personal trainer/wellness consultant, leading bootcamps outside, conducting the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation for the R.C.M.P. and I still work as a certified C.P.R./basic life support instructor.

Little known fact:
I’m allergic to wine.

My best day:
Seeing my niece look at me like I’m the coolest human being on the planet.

Iain Kemp

I developed my love affair with physical activity at a young age when I first discovered the game of soccer. As I began to excel at the game the infatuation grew into a full-blown passion and reverence for the human body and it’s potential, which inevitably spawned my educational background; I graduated with distinction from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Kinesiology and am a Certified Personal Trainer through the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.

I believe that everyone is an athlete in their own way and my goal is to help people of all walks of life strive for their best. Though I am a professional, I like to keep things fun, light-hearted and inviting…something you will find out very quickly!

Little known fact:
I can chop onions faster than Gordon Ramsay.

Scott Kehler

Born in the lovely rural town/city of Winkler, MB, I have worked at a number of jobs, from working on the farm, to flipping burgers at McDonald’s (don’t hold that against me, I was young and wanted my own car). I have always had an interest in physical activity and exercise, which led me to obtain my degree at the University of Manitoba.  This Fall I am pursuing my Master’s degree in Kinesiology to extend my knowledge of the human body.

True or False?  Physical activity and exercise are only for people that are healthy and do not have complications or disease.  FALSE.  Physical activity and exercise have been scientifically shown to aid in the treatment (and prevention) of a number of health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, and sarcopenia (muscle loss).

My best day ever would have to be surrounded by the wilderness (of course not when it is minus 50 degrees Celsius with the wind chill), just to take a moment to get away from our fast-paced world.

Melissa Deonaraine

I am a graduate from the University of Manitoba with a Major in Athletic Therapy.  My interest for Athletic Therapy came about from the injuries I incurred while playing on the provincial field hockey team as a striker.  My therapist was able to address and strengthen my injuries quickly and as a result I became intrigued and decided to learn more about this industry.  I found it incredibly interesting and was impressed with the speed of my recovery.

Currently, I am the Medical Liaison/Athletic Therapist for Team Manitoba for the Inter-Provincial Games (Canada Games, Western Canada Summer Games and Manitoba Games), as well as for the provincial girls soccer team.  I am also listed as a service provider with C.S.C.M. (Canadian Sport Centre Manitoba).

Little known fact:
I love to watch old black and white movies.

Jeff MacGregor

In May 2010, I graduated from Dalhousie University with a degree in Kinesiology. I am a Certified Personal Trainer with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and I also have my Level 1 National Coaching certification. After spending 6 years away from home playing junior and university hockey in the Maritimes, I moved back to Winnipeg and joined Advantage Conditioning in September.
I believe that a personal exercise program designed specifically with a person’s abilities and goals in mind can be adapted to fit into anyone’s hectic schedule. I like to be a little creative and change things up to keep the exercises fresh and interesting while still enjoying the physical and mental benefits from working hard.
How do I pass the winter?

Little known fact:
If you sprinkle cayenne pepper in the bottom of your skates or boots, your feet will stay warm when you’re outside in the freezing weather…..and I’ve got the orange socks to prove it!

Perfect Weekend:
I love to spend time on the weekends and evenings playing shinny with friends – I can’t believe I spent all that time in Halifax where there are no outdoor rinks!

Stephan Kalynuik

I have lived in Winnipeg for my whole life and eventually one day plan to move away somewhere that stays warm all year round.  I have been playing hockey since I was four years old and and that experience was the beginning of my interest in the field of physical fitness. I have been working for Advantage Conditioning since last year. Although this is my first actual training job, I have been in and around the gym scene for 7 years. My fitness started as a hobby and has turned into a personal lifestyle. Over time I have discovered that helping people reach their fitness goals is equally important to me as my own.

Little known fact: While working for Advantage I’ve accumulated a number of parking tickets.

Evan Kingston

Born and raised in Winnipeg, my passion for fitness began at an early age. Hitting the weight room to become the biggest, strongest, and fastest athlete alive, I soon realized there was more to exercise then just athletic development. It was a good thing too, since my genetics didn’t end up taking me very far (I’m still last picked for most sports…).

I finished my Bachelors in Kinesiology at the University of Manitoba and I am a Certified Personal Trainer through the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology. Currently, I am working towards both my Exercise Physiologist and Strength and Conditioning Specialist certifications.

I have been taught many different exercise training methods in my time. Bodybuilding, accelerated fat-loss, strong man training, plyometics, and kettlebell training are just a few in the list. I never stop learning. Right now I am researching rehabilitation techniques for injuries and how to optimize glucose intake with exercise. I am a nerd.

Little known fact:
My dogs are 6 and 7 years old and I still treat them like puppies

Chelsea White

I graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Athletic Therapy.

After experiencing back issues from snowboarding I went to see an Athletic Therapist for help. With a combination of hands on treatment and the customized exercise program I was pain free and fully recovered. Over the years I sustained injuries from running and car accidents, I would always go see my Athletic therapist for help, benefitting from their expertise in musculoskeletal injuries. I had always had an interest in the human body and wanted to be in the medical field. It was these experiences that solidified for me that Athletic therapy was the career path that I wanted to take. What drew me to the field and continues to motivate me to be a better therapist is the ability to positively affect a person’s everyday life, helping them recover from injuries and giving them the opportunity to do the things they enjoy in life.

Perfect Sunday afternoon:
A crisp fall day at the park, when the leaves are just starting to turn red, reading a book with the warm sun on my face.

Little Known Fact:
When I was younger I was on a competitive swimming team, but I wouldn’t compete, I just liked going to practice.
